Chapter 23

Hardy

As we were driving home, my phone alerts were letting me know I had a pile of texts coming in. I was on call, as I was nearly all the time, but these weren’t emergency alerts. These were annoying texts from some other source. I wasn’t really a technology guy, so I kinda just let the beeping go in one ear and out the other.

“Aren’t you going to see who that is?” Frankie obviously was a tech kind of girl. It looked like she wanted to grab the phone and see what the hell was up.

“Nah. I’m driving. Whoever it is can wait.”

“If you say so.” A mischievous grin started to creep across her face. I had to really concentrate on the road when that happened. She was stingy with her smiles, however, the reason behind it had me on edge.

“Don’t touch that phone, Red.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Bullshit.”

The smile grew wide and she lunged for the phone. I had no idea who it was texting me, but there was a pretty good chance it would either embarrass the shit out of me or put me in the dog house. I hadn’t even made it into the house yet, and there was no way I was getting kicked out before I made it to third base.

The problem was, I was driving and she was not. “Lightening quick reflexes there Frankie. You’ve been holding back on me on our runs?”

She stuck her tongue out at me in answer and swiped on my phone. Lucky for me, I had a tech whiz for a sister who forced me to put a password on the damn thing. It was my turn to stick out my tongue.

“Mature, Hardy.”

“Ah, pot meet kettle?”

She pouted and looked all cute and stuff and I almost caved and gave her my password. Then, something occurred to me. “1177”

She looked at me and tilted her head to the side. “What?”

“That’s the password. 1177”

And then she got me. I imagined building a life with this woman was going to be a long journey in building trust and I had to start somewhere.

“Hardy. Thank-you.”

“Whatever you need, baby, you can get it from me. Ok?”

She smiled that smile and it was all I needed. Well, for now.

She set the phone back in the cup holder. “Not gonna look, Red?”

“Do you want me to?”

“Sure, if you want. I have nothing to hide.”

She picked the phone back up and swiped it open, entered the password and grinned. “You have five new texts. Three from Will, one from your sister and one from your mom.” She looked over at me. “Do you want to me to read them?”

“If you want.”

I could see the indecision she struggled with as she began chewing on her lip. “Ok, only because we’ve come this far. We might as well see what they wanted.”

She turned towards me and couldn’t stop grinning like a fool. She had come so far since we first met. My little Red.

“Ok, so, your mom wants to know if you’re coming for dinner this week.
